There’s no place like home: Local actress in town with “Wicked” cast

By Sue Suchyta

SOMETHING “WICKED” THIS WAY COMES
When “Wicked,” the recession-proof musical Broadway tour opens in Detroit Dec. 7, a local actress will be home for the holidays while still doing eight shows a week.

DEARBORN DIVA
Casey Quinn is a Dearborn native and 2004 Divine Child High School graduate.
She grew up dancing at her family studio, the Noretta Dunworth School of Dance in Dearborn founded by her grandmother, Noretta Dunworth, and directed now by her mother, Loni Lane. She also took private voice lessons while growing up.

ADVICE TO TOMORROW’S STARS
She tells teens who want to make it on Broadway to learn to sing and dance.
“Once you make it through the dance cut you have to make it through the singing cut as well,” Quinn said.

BEING GREEN
She was with the “Wicked” company for a year in Chicago and has been on tour now for nearly three years.
She sings and dances in multiple ensemble roles: as a student at “dear old Shiz” when Elphaba and Galinda “cross paths,” as a citizen of the Emerald City, as a winged monkey and as a citizen of Oz.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
This is the first time the tour has brought her to Detroit. The show’s initial engagement in Detroit was in 2008 before she was on tour.

SENSE OF WONDER REMAINS
She said she still experiences a sense of wonder each time the curtain goes up, and that no two shows are the same since the combinations of “swings” (skilled substitutes) and understudies are always changing.
“Different things happen every night,” Quinn said. “It’s not the same show eight times a week.”

FOSSE FAN
After “Wicked” she would love to do a show on Broadway or in Chicago.
“When ‘Sweet Charity’ was on Broadway I wanted to do that,” Quinn said. “I love anything Fosse.”

DREAMS DO COME TRUE
“It was always one of my dreams to do ‘Wicked,’” Quinn said. “It has been a life-changer for sure.”
Wicked” will run through Dec. 31 at the Detroit Opera House. Call (313) 961-3500 for tickets.
